The Terry Affair

So if you’ve been watching any kind of international sports coverage, you’ll have seen the news about England Captain John Terry being removed.  The 29-year-old Chelsea captain and midfielder has been England’s captain since August 2008.

He was removed on Friday, February 5th, a week after a married Terry lost a High Court battle to ban publication details of a four-month affair with Vanessa Perroncel, the ex-girlfriend of England teammate Wayne Bridge, and mother of Bridge’s child.

In a statement released on Friday, England coach Fabio Capello said, ““As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad. What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice.”

When I first heard this story, I didn’t know why he’d been removed, only that it had been due to happenings in his personal life.  First, I was confused as to why his personal life was so important, and then dumbfounded as he was stripped of his captaincy.

Reading on the why, I can understand why the coach felt the need to remove him.  When the captain of the team has a prolonged, secret affair with another teammate’s girlfriend, it puts the entire team at odds.  If you can’t trust your captain, how can he lead you??  If you can’t trust your teammate, how can the team work as one unit??

As great a player as Terry may be, if the team is unwilling to follow him, he has no choice but to step down and allow them to follow someone they trust.  I just hope he hasn’t lost all chances at playing with the team, which is a possibility if Bridge feels he can’t play with him and the team backs him.

Rio Ferdinand, the 31-year-old Manchester United central defender has been chosen as the new captain.  Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard will take over as vice captain.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the team can work with each other, bad feelings or no.  But I can tell you right now, if it was me, I’d have kicked his ass and had him removed.  But that’s just me.

Good luck, Terry!!  You might need it.
